Branded as underdogs in the UEFA Super Cup 2024, Serie A club Atalanta failed to punch above their weight against the free-scoring Champions League holders in the curtain-raiser. Making a sensational debut for Real Madrid, Mbappe laid down the marker with his first goal as the Vinicius Junior-inspired side outclassed Atalanta 2-0 in the UEFA Super Cup.

Forgetful Super Cup debut for Atalanta
Atalanta defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in May to set up the blockbuster UEFA Super Cup showdown with Los Blancos, who eased past Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund 2-0 to seal a record-extending 15th Champions League trophy in the 2023-2024 season. Coached by Gian Piero Gasperini, Europa League winners Atalanta debuted in the UEFA Super Cup with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the La Liga heavyweights.
Mbappe’s dream start at Real
Even though manager Carlo Ancelotti remained tight-lipped on Mbappe’s debut in the curtain-raiser of the UEFA season 2024-2025, the former Paris Saint Germain (PSG) forward was heavily tipped to spearhead the world-class attack of the Los Blancos in Warsaw. Starting in his first competitive game of the season for Real Madrid, Mbappe joined forces with superstars Vinicius and Rodrygo in the attack.

The deadly trio was assisted by England playmaker Jude Bellingham, who set up the opening goal for the Frenchman in the second half. Bellingham, Vinicius and Rodrygo all contributed to Mbappe’s first goal after midfielder Fede Valverde broke the deadlock from close range in the 59th minute at Warsaw’s National Stadium. While Madrid became the most successful club in Super Cup’s history, legendary manager Carlo Ancelotti equalled former Los Blancos coach Miguel Munoz on a joint-record 14 titles at the club.
